there is a Linux loader named 'dt' you can use to pop three different
operating systems into the VTech Helio (snarf it via the VTech
developer's site):

VTOS - native, windows-only
PocketLinux - kaffe, java-applet driven
linux-vr - 2.4 kernel with the W window system

1. hard reset the helio by pressing the reset button and on button for 1
second, then release the on button first, then the reset button

2. hold the up botton and the on button for 6-8 seconds, release them,
then press the down button

3. the helio screen will clear and you'll see the bootloader screen

4. stick the helio in its cradle, then use one of the following:

- the linux image is uploaded like this:

# ./dt /dev/ttyS0 linux.bin 0x10000

- the VTOS image is uploaded like this:

# ./dt /dev/ttyS0 pda.bin 0x10000

it will take about 4 minutes... dt will report "Write Check Complete!"
you can then press the reset button...

linux-vr is active via the serial port, so you can use minicom to login...
(haven't tried logging in running PocketLinux, but i have run PocketLinux
on the Helio... you'll find that with the Helio's limited memory, only a
small subset of the PocketLinux apps will appear on the Helio... much
better to use linux-vr, and hopefully, a backport of the flek/fltk
interface that is now being worked on by Agenda VR3 developers... the
Agenda VR3 has twice the memory, and currently uses all flash memory in
the developers model)

if you're going to run PocketLinux, run it on a color PDA with lots of
memory, such as the Casio series or (hopefully after the holidays) on a
Compaq 3650 as soon as they clear their backlog of orders...
