Subject: Hot-swap CD <-> floppy?

Our Dell Latitude laptop has a modular floppy drive and a modular CD
drive. Both work fine under SuSE 7.0, but only one at a time because
the two sockets are mirror images, and both drives only fit into the
right one (the left is for batteries only). Trying to swap one drive
for the other while Linux is running freezes the system totally. Can
anything be done to acccess both drives in one boot cycle?
